During the final quest in Davrin‘s companion storyline, he will ask you to help him choose what the best thing for the Griffons would be: he can either let them stay in Arlathan Forest and Become Sentinels of Nature, or he can decide that They Belong With the Grey Wardens as natural protectors.
Depending on what you tell Davrin to do, he will get a different Veilguard Skill and piece of Legendary Armor, and he will take a different approach to some things going forward. In this guide, we will go over when you will make this choice, and what happens when you do.
When Do You Make the Choice
The choice will appear at the end of the quest The Profane and The Lost, which is the final quest in Davrin‘s storyline. After defeating Isseya, you will be taken into a cutscene, during which you will be given a choice on what Davrin will do with the griffons. You can either choose to let them Become Sentinels of Nature, or decide that They Belong with Grey Wardens.
Regardless of what you choose, Davrin will become a Hero of the Veilguard immediately after the end of the quest, though he will receive a different Veilguard Skill and Legendary Armor depending on your choice.
Results of Your Choice
Once you make your choice, Davrin will gain a Veilguard Skill and a legendary armor specifically for him. Your choice will determine which Skill and armor he gets:
If you choose for them to become Sentinels of Nature, Davrin will deal much more damage with his Battlemaster Skill, and will make Staggering multiple enemies much easier with his armor. Keeping the Griffons with the Grey Wardens, however, will give Davrin cooldown reduction and a way to give you Deflect with his abilities, making him a much more effective tank. On top of this, the armor gained from this choice will be a great support for Fire-based builds.
Become Sentinels of Nature
If you tell Davrin that the griffons should Become Sentinels of Nature, then he will receive the Wildwood Benefactor Legendary Armor and the Battlemaster Veilguard Skill immediately after the end of The Profane and The Lost.
The Wildwood Benefactor is an extremely situational piece of armor. For Stagger builds that make a lot of use out of Detonations, the increase to crowd-control and stagger amount from detonations is nice, though a bit underwhelming compared to most companion Legendary Armor.
Despite a lackluster Legendary Armor, Davrin’s Battlemaster Veilguard Skill is one of the best in the game. Because of Davrin‘s use as a Warrior, increasing the damage of Assan abilities can substantially improve his functionality, as well as giving you a method to guarantee critical hits on command!
After making this choice, Davrin will be a bit softer and more open. In addition, you can find the non-Assan griffons hanging around in Arlathan forest.
They Belong with Grey Wardens
If you tell Davrin that the griffons Belong with Grey Wardens, then he will receive the Grey Benefactor Legendary Armor and the Defender Veilguard Skill immediately after the end of The Profane and The Lost.
The Grey Benefactor legendary armor is the better of the two legendary armors for Davrin. For Fire builds — such as Champion Warriors — this armor drastically improves Burning, but even without a focus on Fire, the improvement to detonations is extremely powerful.
Davrin‘s Defender Veilguard Skill can be extremely powerful. The free stack of Deflect can be very useful on higher difficulties, and reduced cooldowns can allow you to get more detonations and ability uses in faster, being extremely useful for a well-composed party.
After making this choice, Davrin will be more resolved and focused. In addition, you can find the non-Assan griffons hanging around in Hossberg Wetlands, training with the Grey Wardens.
No matter which choice you make, Davrin will become a much more powerful Companion moving forward. If he is one of your main Companions, make your choice based on which Skill and armor will help your playstyle more. If not, choose what you believe will be best for the Griffons!
